Optical Wireless Communications

International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (OWC'23), co-located with IEEE ISCC 2023

Optical wireless communications

Optical wireless communications (OWC) is a form of optical communication in which unguided visible, infrared (IR), or ultraviolet (UV) light is used to carry a signal.

OWC'23

OWC'23 workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry working in emerging LiFi, visible light communications (VLC) and underwater optical communications as well as the traditional wireless infrared communications (IRC) to present, share and discuss their latest research results.

Workshop Scope

The ever increasing demand for capacity and quality in wireless communication links has continued to inspire researchers to innovate new design methodologies and concepts over wireless systems and networks with the ultimate aim of achieving a next-generation network. In the past few decades, optical wireless communication (OWC) technologies have been recognized as promising enablers for flexible, high-capacity communication systems/networks, especially in 5G/6G, aerospace, and internet of things (IoT) applications. In fact, the current radio frequency (RF) spectrum is no longer sufficient to meet the exponential increase of the physical devices connected to the internet as well as the high capacity backhaul connectivity required by 5G and beyond communications. Regarded as an attractive complement to RF-based communication, OWC uses an ultra-wide range of the unregulated spectrum that can provide significant spectrum relief, especially when an infrastructure is already in place. OWC technologies encompass several research derivatives, such as free-space optical (FSO) communications, visible light communications (VLC), ultraviolet (UV) communications, optical camera communications (OCC), and underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC).

OWC-based systems have rapidly gained momentum considering the tremendous advancements in optical sources from high-power bulky solid-state laser diodes (LDs) to low power compact light emitting diodes (LEDs) in different optical spectra (i.e., infrared, visible, ultraviolet) and detectors from vacuum tube based to semiconductor avalanche photodetectors (PDs). LED devices offer not only compelling advantages for energy efficient lighting but also tremendous opportunities for wireless communications. In the OCC-based systems, the optical image sensors have been utilized as receivers based on infrared (IR) or visible bands. Considering that no modification is required at the receiver, the current off-the-the-shelf smartphones, digital cameras, rear vehicle cameras, and surveillance cameras are all possible receiver candidates. Therefore, OCC has attracted much interest in areas such as IoT, indoor localization, motion capture, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). On the other hand, VLC networks have been expanded to deliver localization and positioning information, which can be used for guidance or to deliver context-sensitive information. In this context, OWC systems have also been developed for vehicular networks to convey collision avoidance information as well as traffic data to moving automobiles. UV OWC links enjoy the benefit of covert and license-free operation while requiring little orientation. FSO communication systems have been recognized as a good wireless interconnecting technology for high-capacity communication networks in B5G/6G deployment, ensuring data rates similar to those offered by optical fiber systems but at a fraction of its deployment cost.

In addition to terrestrial applications, UOWC have recently attracted interest in the field of wireless communication as an inexpensive broadband submarine technology. According to the current technological vision of NTT DOCOMO on 5G Evolution and 6G, UOWC are considered a potential candidate for B5G/6G networks. Taking advantage of the rapid advancement of blue-green LDs and LEDs and detectors, UOWC can provide higher data rate transmission at lower latency levels and significantly lower power consumption compared to RF and acoustic counterparts for short range wireless links.

Although the area of OWC is included in several academic societies (e.g., SPIE, Optica, IEEE Communications, Signal Processing, Photonics), it remains quite isolated, and it is still difficult for the researchers in this field to identify a flagship conference or workshop on OWC. The main objectives of this workshop are (a) to establish OWC as a successful track within the main conference, and (b) to foster a community and relevant, focused activities, and present state-of-the-art research and development results from academia and industry at an international level. The workshop covers OWC with their different derivatives, i.e., FSO, VLC, UV, OCC for terrestrial, space or underwater applications. At the workshop, we plan to have invited papers; in particular, we would like to reach a broader community of core communication theory, information theory, signal processing, and networking researchers.
